Saga Dawa (Kailash-Tibet) Festival

The SAGA DAWA is one of the most important and cherishable Tibetan Buddhist festivals, held each year on the full moon day of the fourth lunar month of the Tibetan calendar, to celebrate Sakyamunis enlightenment. This astounding festival is also known as the Festival for Releasing Living Things. This auspicious day coincides with three important events in Buddha's life namely his birth, nirvana and par nirvana (death). Since the Saga Dawa festival falls on the holiest month of the Tibetan calendar, it is believed that good deeds and prayers are multiplied thousand fold during this event. The most important part of the festival is replacing the 'Tarboche Flagpole', the famous huge pole that lies on the way of Kailash Kora. Every year, the flagpole is brought down and a new pole is erected in the place. The pole replacing event is watched by all the locals and foreigners alike with wonder and awe. People all around the Tibet flock to the place to attend the event and to attach their small prayer flags to the pole. this festival has been held here for the last thousand years... Having been part just once is such a powerful experience.
